UKMHA Guide to Apprenticeships

In partnership with SMB College Group, UKMHA are able to support both local and national companies to find the right apprentice for their business.

The UK Material Handling Association (UKMHA) has been acutely aware of the challenge across the material handling industry to reduce the skills gap and to help provide skills for young people to join at the same time as attracting people with valuable skills into the industry. The reasons behind this are an ever-decreasing talent pool due to an ageing workforce and a limited college provision to provide the relevant skills for young people to join our industry.

CFTS Through Examination Training

Thorough Examination is the name given to the mandatory inspection required by law to ensure that material handling equipment is in safe working order.

Lifting equipment must receive a Thorough Examination at least once a year and inspections can only be undertaken by a Competent Person. CFTS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the UKMHA that provides accreditation to demonstrate competence. CFTS accreditation shows that you’ve signed up to the industry’s highest standard with a professional code of practice.

Unfortunately, not every Thorough Examination satisfies the complete legal requirements – some examinations only do half the job by covering LOLER (The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) but not PUWER (The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998).

To ensure professional standards are maintained and to offer MHE operators complete peace of mind, the UKMHA has devised CFTS Thorough Examination Training. CFTS-approved engineers cover both the Thorough Examination requirement of LOLER and the Safety Inspection requirement PUWER.

The CFTS mark is a guarantee that a truck has been examined properly and that key components such as brakes and steering have all been checked along with the lifting mechanism.

CFTS Training courses are delivered in regional locations and via the UKMHA’s central training provider: SMB College Group. To book please click https://ukmha.org.uk/training-and-apprenticeships/ For more details on the work of CFTS, visit www.thoroughexamination.org
