The National Forklift Safety Convention took place on Wednesday 30th October 2019, and what a day it was!
Delegates from across the country gathered together to hear a number of brilliant speakers share insightand advice on how to improve forklift safety. Particular interest was on the presentation from Kanwal Kanda, Head of Transportation at the Health & Safety Executive, who discussed the latest statistics from the HSE.
Industry-renowned behavioural safety expert Tim Marsh, back by popular demand, presented an extended session as key speaker at the convention.
“We were extremely glad to have Professor Marsh join us at this year’s safety convention,” said Tim Waples, Chief Executive of the UKMHA. “Analysing and addressing the human factor is fundamental when seeking to change the culture to one that lives and breathes on-site safety. It’s not just about systems and protocols, but very much psychology too.”
New to this year’s line-up was Kirk Kinnell, an ex-hostage negotiator who provided some fascinating insights on how to apply effective communication techniques into everyday working practice. The convention featured a presentation from event sponsor Toyota, as well as a number of case histories from DHL, Aggregate Industries, and Kellogg’s, whose talk was based on the company’s winning Safe Site entry into the UKMHA Awards for Excellence 2019.
As a highlight of the materials handling calendar, forklift owners, site managers, trainers, safety officers and operators attended the event, and were provided with expert advice, industry news and vital learning opportunities.
“The convention is invaluable as it brings the industry together for a common goal: ensuring best practice and creating safer places to work. It’s something directly relevant to every company that uses even a single forklift,” said Tim.
The convention focussed on innovative but practical real-world solutions that can be implemented on any site, often at low or no cost. It also highlighted best practice andthe latest legislative changes — with an expert panel on hand to answer every imaginable question.
