This course is intended for forklift technicians and managers looking to improve their understanding of safe lifting practices. Successful completion of the course will provide participants with the confidence to use lifting accessories, such as chains and slings, safely and more efficiently. They will also gain a better understanding of relevant legislation such as LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations).

Featuring a mix of classroom-based and practical, hands-on learning experiences, the course is delivered in person by SMB College’s highly qualified instructors.

Covering a wide array of key topics, it is divided into four 90-minute sessions:

Session 1: Legislation and Terminology

  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Lifting Operations and Liftings Equipment Regulations 1998
  • Definitions
  • Safe Working Load
  • Planning lifting activities and work point risk assessment

Session 2: Slings, Chains and Lifting Accessories

  • Mode factors and slinging angles
  • Webslings and roundslings
  • Chain slings
  • Hoists, hooks, shackles and eyebolts

Session 3: Safe Working Practices

  • Pre-use inspection
  • Load estimation
  • Lifting equipment, including jibs and jacks
  • Rules for safe lifting, including signalling

Session 4: Practical

The final session will give participants the chance to put their theoretical knowledge to the test in a practical workshop activity.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Verify the safe condition of lifting accessories.
  • Identify and select appropriate lifting accessories for different tasks.
  • Apply factors to determine actual capacity depending on lifting configuration.
  • Recognise the health and safety considerations associated with lifting operations.
  • Demonstrate awareness of relevant legislation.
  • Apply safe working practices when slinging and lifting.

Upon satisfactory completion of the assessment, attendees will be provided with a Certificate of Attendance.

Duration: One day (split into four 90-minute sessions with breaks in between)
