Training and Apprenticeships

Our Training and Professional Development courses are intended to raise skills levels across the sector and encourage new talent to develop careers in the industry.

Here are some examples of our courses:

  • Thorough Examination – specialist courses designed for experienced engineers. These concentrate on the inspection of chains and forks, current legislation, documentation and the responsibilities of a competent person to ensure proper Thorough Examination
  • Thorough Examination Revalidation – courses exclusively for engineers who have previously completed a TE course. Training brings engineers up to date with current legislation and reaffirms their inspection skills, plus confirms their right to be accredited as a Competent Person
  • Apprenticeships and Apprentice Training – helping ensure next-generation engineers are skilled in the servicing of material handling equipment
  • Engineer Training – helping ensure the highest standards within the workforce
  • Talent Attraction – ensuring the best calibre of person is attracted to the industry
  • Grants – offering financial support to ensure no one is excluded from developing a career in material handling

CFTS Through Examination Training

Thorough Examination is the name given to the mandatory inspection required by law to ensure that material handling equipment is in safe working order.

Lifting equipment must receive a Thorough Examination at least once a year and inspections can only be undertaken by a Competent Person. CFTS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the UKMHA that provides accreditation to demonstrate competence. CFTS accreditation shows that you’ve signed up to the industry’s highest standard with a professional code of practice.

Unfortunately, not every Thorough Examination satisfies the complete legal requirements – some examinations only do half the job by covering LOLER (The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) but not PUWER (The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998).

To ensure professional standards are maintained and to offer MHE operators complete peace of mind, the UKMHA has devised CFTS Thorough Examination Training. CFTS-approved engineers cover both the Thorough Examination requirement of LOLER and the Safety Inspection requirement PUWER.

The CFTS mark is a guarantee that a truck has been examined properly and that key components such as brakes and steering have all been checked along with the lifting mechanism.

CFTS Training courses are delivered in regional locations and via the UKMHA’s central training provider: SMB College Group.
