There are several things that you can do, including: –
- Ensure that all hoses are inspected for damage and leaks, as part of your daily checks
- Ensure that all lifting equipment, including lift trucks are inspected at least annually, by a competent and authorised inspector, in accordance with the requirements of The Lifting Operations Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
Whilst wearing safety glasses may seem an extreme measure, on most lift trucks it is possible to install a front screen which would offer protection to the operator from any fluid or object approaching from the front. A full cabin would offer all round protection but may be more than is necessary.
The most important element is the regular inspection; hoses are not normally prone to splitting suddenly, it is usually as a result of some external damage which could potentially have been picked up during an inspection. In addition to the LOLER requirements, detailed above, as an employer you also have obligations under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), which, as opposed to LOLER, covers the safety of the whole machine rather than just the lifting attachment. To ensure that you are covered for both LOLER and PUWER, be sure to have your Lift Truck’s Annual, Thorough Examinations, undertaken by a CFTS accredited, inspector.
