Meet the Jury

The UKMHA Awards for Excellence jury, comprised of materials handling experts, ensures that the hotly-contested Archie statuettes are awarded to the most deserving products and services. The jury for Awards 2020 is:

Alexander Glasmacher

Managing Director, ELOKON Group

Alexander has over 25 years of logistics and electronics experience and joined ELOKON – which develops and supplies safety and assistance systems for forklift trucks, AGVs, AMRs and cobots – in 2016. He has led the company’s strategic global expansion and initiated the recent establishment of its US subsidiary in Atlanta.

He is a regular speaker at trade fairs and events in Germany, the USA and the UK on topics such as how digitisation and autonomous vehicle technology can drive product development of industrial vehicles for a safer warehouse environment. He also serves on the Supervisory board of a German automotive retail company.

Before joining ELOKON, Alexander worked for nine years for a NASDAQ listed supply chain solutions company, in his most recent role as Managing Director overseeing its European and UK business.
He attended Stanford University (in the US) and INSEAD in France where he gained a BA in Economics and an MBA respectively as well as fluency in other languages apart from his native German. He is based at ELOKON’s Global Headquarters near Hamburg, Germany.

Graham Hughes

National Account Manager, TVH

Graham has over 45 years’ experience in the materials handling industry.

Working life started off as a lift truck apprentice at Levertons, Spalding where he gained City & Guild qualifications in ‘Maintenance and Repair of Contractors Plant Craft and Technician along with other internal qualifications

A seven-year role as a field service engineer followed before taking charge of the engine and transmission rebuild department. Success in that department saw a move to Northampton to run the newly opened branch a role which only lasted one year.

Next stop was Komatsu Forklift and Pimespo Concessionaire Handling Analysis where he became the Technical Manager for England and Wales. Whilst there, he completed a Certificate in Industrial Management a Diploma in Management Services, and also a GCSE French!!

Acquisition of Handling Analysis by Lex gave the opportunity to become an Account Manager.

A three-year stint at Barloworld as an Area Salesman followed redundancy from Lex.

In 2003 Graham joined TVH. Initially as a used equipment buyer. An Area Sales Manager quickly followed and after a few years, the role of National Account Manager was to be taken up. He remains in this role today.

Graham is involved in the East Midlands Rugby Union whereas a member of the Governance Committee he helps with Volunteer Recruitment for EMRU clubs. He is also a mentor on the RFU Leadership Academy activities that have brought benefits both in and out of work.

David Goss

MSc IEng MIET FCMI

David is the Technical Manager of the British Industrial Truck Association (BITA) and chairman of the European Committee on Industrial Truck Safety, CEN/TC150. He is also UK lead for activities within the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee on Industrial Trucks, ISO/TC110, and is active in all of the associated working groups developing standards.

An important part of David’s role at BITA is building on our historically strong links with partner associations around the world, for instance, representing the UK’s technical interests at the European trade association for the materials handling industry, FEM. He is proud to have imported the National Forklift Safety Day initiative from our US colleagues the ITA.

Before joining BITA, David was Technical Director at UK designers and manufacturers of standard and bespoke lifting, handling and manoeuvring solutions, Advanced Handling Ltd. Prior to this he was Technical Director of specialist hydraulic equipment manufacturer Ram Power Ltd.

Andy Cartwright​

Technical Manager, Mentor Training

Following a military career serving with the British Army in the Royal Corps of Signals, Andy has worked as a forklift truck and access equipment instructor and training manager for employers and manufacturers (including Safeway, Sainsburys and JLG) – instructing delegates on their use around the globe.

A member of the AITT Standards Committee, the AITT Council as well as a Registered AITT Instructor and having spent 2 years on IPAF’s International Training Committee, he is well-respected in the industry and has more than 30 years’ practical experience.

In his current role, Andy, a Chartered Member of IOSH, a Member of the Institute of Industrial Accident Investigators as well as a Member of the International Institute of Risk Safety Managers and an instructor examiner and senior instructor for IPAF, writes and designs courses across a range of workplace transport equipment – for managers, operators, colleagues and various accrediting bodies.

Andy has recently been involved with the Accrediting Bodies Association looking at the standardisation of testing standards.

In addition, Andy advises on updates and legislative changes and works closely with customers to solve problems and identify training solutions. He has been used by the HSE as an expert witness.

Alan Barnes

Managing Director, MSM/DRH Limited 

Alan has over 35 years of experience in the forklift & plant industry. Alan joined the company as an apprentice in 1995, qualified as an engineer and later ran the service for 5 years.  

He successfully moved into sales and was instrumental in the management buyout in 2007. Alan’s broad knowledge of the industry and wealth of experience of Forklift Diggers and Dumpers enables him to understand the best solution for the job in hand. Alan is a family man, he has 2 boys, and his hobbies are Hockey Golf and Rugby. 

Simon Duddy

Editor, Handling & Storage Solutions (HSS)

Simon is the editor of Handling & Storage Solutions, the longstanding media partner of the UKMHA Awards for Excellence. A technical writer and B2B magazine editor for more than 15 years, he has edited Handling & Storage Solutions – the industry’s highest circulation magazine with 16,000 ABC audited readers – for seven years, covering forklifts, materials handling and logistics.

Five years ago, Simon launched the Safer Logistics Campaign to boost health and safety awareness in the industry.

John Maguire FCILT – Managing Director

Narrow Aisle Ltd – Flexi Trucks

After initially studying Engineering and working on Project Management in the Oil Industry, John’s career in Warehousing Materials Handling has spanned over 40 years, specialising in Truck and System development, Warehouse Logistics and Material Handling Fleet Management.

Senior Management roles at Boss Steinbock Group and then Linde Material Handling before joining Narrow Aisle Limited, the UK space-saving specialist who design and make the famous Flexi articulated VNA truck range.

As a long-standing Member and elected Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and a past Chairman of the UK Warehousing Association, John is a recognised authority on all aspects of modern warehouse intralogistics and industrial material handling development and management.
