Can you operate a forklift truck with a motorcycle license on a public highway?

A motorcycle licence does not qualify a fork truck operator to venture onto the public highway.  Regardless of whether the trucks are to be driven within the immediate vicinity or over greater distances, the operator should hold the relevant Driver’s Licence, as detailed below:

Larger forklift trucks would normally require large goods vehicle (LGV) entitlement depending on the Manufacturer’s maximum laden weight, as follows:-

  • Manufacturer’s maximum Laden Weight up to 3.5 tonnes, a driver will need to hold category B
  • Manufacturer’s maximum Laden Weight of between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes category C1 is required
  • Manufacturer’s maximum Laden Weight of over 7.5 tonnes, drivers will need to hold category C
